Michelle was a high school senior year when we started working together. She shared that she thought she had a major procrastination problem, but it turned out to be a time management issue instead. Michelle couldn’t understand why she didn’t have enough time to get a significant amount of homework done before swim practice. She was a star swimmer, swam for her varsity high school team and was going to be on a D1 swim team at college in the fall.
Michelle had practice every day after school. By the time she got home in the evenings, showered, and had dinner, she was facing mountains of homework. She was barely able to complete what was due the next day never mind larger projects and studying.
And although she knew her practice and game schedules, she failed to consider the off-season training sessions, team dinners on game nights and countless school and fundraising events. These “extras” added major stress to her schedule and prevented her from getting everything done that needed to be.
We immediately identified that missing from Michelle’s toolkit was a consistent post-practice routine and a go to physical tool to keep her on track with her school assignments and team commitments. Using the OOOC Academic Planner, I taught her planning and prioritizing skills. The planner accompanied her everywhere she went, and she reviewed it multiple times per day. This allowed Michelle to map her time and adjust her daily schedule. We also established a consistent evening routine so she could complete her schoolwork and get ready for the next day.
When Michelle entered her freshman year as a Division 1 student athlete, she had the tools and confidence to make a healthy transition from high school to college and thrive on every playing field.
