LESLIE LIKES: The Master Binder

Using a CaseIt Binder to Set Up an All-in-One Binder

Over the years, I’ve seen so many students struggle with trying to manage notebooks, folders, binders, spirals and more. And don’t get me started on hole punching. I have yet to meet a student who likes to do so and will keep up with it on a day-to-day basis. Most students need a simple and manageable way to organize their school papers. Let me introduce you to how to set up a “Master Binder.

First, purchase a zippered binder that also contains an accordion folder. I like the ones made by CaseIt. The pull-out accordion is where all the papers, handouts and tests are kept. No hole punching required. Label each section in the accordion by subject name (English, Math, Science, etc.).

All papers will be filed BEHIND the corresponding subject tab and the most recent papers always go in the back. This allows for a natural chronological order. Make sure to schedule weekly clean outs as these papers tend to build up quickly. The three-ring section should be used for notes your student takes in class. Again, divide this section by subject by using clear two-sided dividers for each subject. Label one side of each folder “homework to-do” and “homework done.” This takes the guess work out of where homework will live each night!Lastly, papers that need to be referenced regularly should be inserted into plastic page protectors and placed in the corresponding binder section. So for example, your child’s multiplication chart should go in the math section; her English vocabulary words in English. This all-in-one system is easy to create and easy to manage. By giving your student only one place to house their school papers, you are giving them less opportunities to lose or forget something.
