Don’t Do Perfect. Do Enough!
My clients want advice and guidance to help them construct the perfect schedule or checklist. And surprisingly, I tell them that I don’t do “perfect.” I do “enough.” Meaning organized enough, scheduled enough, time managed enough. Like with any schedule or routine, if you strive for perfection, you will only disappoint and frustrate yourself (and others!). Now I am not saying I don’t have checklists or routines.
Creating reminder checklists to make sure you or your child has everything she or you need to bring to and from work or school is a great way to establish routines. Life is too hectic for us to commit everything to memory. But when they become too restrictive and have no wiggle room when other things get in the way, then we are just setting ourselves up for the unobtainable.
So I give my clients permission to eat a protein bar on the go, wear something they wore yesterday and not complete everything on their “to-do” list. It’s even okay to be late occasionally because you wanted to stop to get your favorite coffee or ice cream. Just be kind to yourself, be flexible, make room for the unexpected, enjoy the spontaneity of something wonderful, and most importantly, laugh at it all.So tell me, what is your “enough”?
