Best Colleges for Students with ADHD and LD
If you have a college-bound student with learning disabilities in your household, you might be concerned that that student will struggle once they're away from home. Will he be in an environment where he can learn and grow effectively? You may not realize that there are two colleges that celebrate and build confidence in students like yours.
Landmark College in Putney, Vermont, offers college-level studies for students with learning disabilities, ADHD, and ASD. They focus on helping students to develop learning skills while they attend college.Beginning in fall 2012, they will offer their first Bachelor's degree program in Liberal Studies, which is described as offering "interested students ... a total college experience that fully integrates Landmark's innovative learning strategies and use of assistive technology - while giving them the critical thinking, communications, problem-solving and decisions skills employers value."New Associate degree programs in Life Sciences and Computer Science/Gaming will also be added in fall 2012. Landmark has offered Associate degrees in Business Administration, Business Studies, General Studies, and Liberal Studies.
Beacon College in Leesburg, Florida is the "only accredited college offering BA and AA degrees exclusively for students with learning disabilities, ADHD, or gifted LD." They specifically work with students to assist them with earning degrees in Liberal Studies, Human Services, and Computer Information Systems.Recently, students from Beacon started a program to mentor students who also have learning disabilities. The program has been mutually beneficial, as the college-aged students teach the younger students how to develop their own learning styles and educational tools.
