Every Student Should Be Doing Homework In The Bathtub
And Other Tips to Conquer Procrastination This Back-to-School Season
Sitting at a desk, alone, in a quiet room is so old school. Conquer homework hassles once and for all with these 5 creative motivation boosters!
1. Play “Hide the Homework”. Hide your student’s homework in different locations around the house. Wherever the homework is found is where they do it. Need some ideas? Think: science in the bathtub; vocabulary under the kitchen table; math on top of the toilet. Adding movement and fun helps students stay motivated and on-task.
2. Set it to music! Music can help students plan, initiate and focus. If your child needs music, have him or her create a 30-minute playlist of music they love. The key is to play the same playlist every time they sit down to work. Eventually the music will become white noise and symbolize it’s time to get into work mode.
3. Shift Subjects. Set up workstations around a table, or in different rooms of the house. Set a timer and have your student work on one subject at a time. When the timer goes off, your child moves to the next subject even if they aren’t done with the previous one. When you shift subjects, no matter what you’re doing, you are less likely to drift off and lose focus. Giving yourself the mental break from working on one assignment by starting another is the key to procrastinating less.
4. Get active. Movement helps to lay down learning. Put “energy” into their tasks by having your student stand up while reading or walk the dog while reviewing notes.
5. Go outside. Work on math problems with sidewalk chalk, jump rope to learn vocabulary, or bounce on the trampoline while reciting spelling words. Fresh air refreshes the brain!
